Special Plan for Walking and Bicycling Traffic System in Changchun,
was completed recently, planing to build the walking trail system and bicycle system with 38 slow traffic corridors whose total length were nearly 500 kilometers in the urban area. When they are finished, Changchun citizens could freely walk and ride a bicycle on nice and safe slow traffic corridors without any vehicle. Here is the report by CCTV reporter Liu Yuanyuan and Jilin TV reporter Zhang Yihe:
The so-called urban non-motorized system, also named slow traffic, takes walking, cycling and other slow traffic modes as main part of urban traffic. It can effectively solve the conflicts between slow and fast transportation and difficulties of slow non-motorized modes on road and other problems. It also can efficiently guide the residents to apply healthy and environmental traffic modes such as “walking + public transportation” and “bicycle + public transportation”. At present, the urban non-motorized system planned in Changchun includes regional green slow traffic corridors connecting the city and its surrounding areas, urban slow traffic corridors concatenating urban charming activity places, and community-level slow traffic corridors. It will be an effective way to facilitate the residents’ travel.
Urban slow traffic corridor
Mr. Cheng Yingnan, director of the third planning institute in Changchun Institute of Urban Planning & Design Institute, said (recording: a developed and perfect public transportation system containing subways and other vehicles can not solve the ultimate traffic problems. But walking and cycling can fill this gap, and improve the utilization of road resources. Despite alleviating traffic pressure and promoteing energy saving and emission reduction, it can also strengthen people’s physical health. Therefore, the construction of slow traffic corridors is not only necessary but also at the right time for Changchun. )
Regional slow traffic corridors
Mr. Cheng Yingnan said that the rail transportation is under construction in Changchun and combined with slow traffic. The rail transportation is used for long-distance and large-capacity public transit. But bicycle is used for short distance transport and also the most convenient mode of personal traffic. Thus, as the transportation develops, the public demands for slow traffic become increasingly strong, the slow traffic has been put on the agenda.
