The press conference of eudemonia market “Peony Street·I’m there” hosted by our institute was held at the conference room on fourth floor of Changchun Urban Planning Association on July 8, 2015. The press conference invited leaders of Guilin sub-district office and SHINING Co., Ltd, and correspondents of many Changchun news media.
The press conference was hosted by Jin Mingchuan, the director of cultural communication center, who introduced the background and significance of eudemonia market to the guests. This event is the first community cultural activity created by our institute, aiming to change top-down approach of traditional planning. This activity sends planners into communities in order to deeply understand the current community development and existing problems. By establishing autonomous organizations and holding community activities, our institute discusses solutions with residents and merchants, and builds residents’ consensus to create ultimately eudemonia communities with mutual comminication respect and cooperation.
As a naturally formed “Coffee Street”, Peony Street is becoming more mature, whether in cultural orientation, art cohesion or business mode. This is why Peony Street has been chosen to hold the first large-scale community activity. This “Eudemonia Market” will be the first perfect combination of street and market, and of community and planning.
Song Wei, the director of our institute, introduced the detailed process of eudemonia market activity on July 11-12. The two-day eudemonia market titled “Peony Street·I’m there” will be held on the two sides of Peony Street, Xikang Alley, Xikang Road and Guilin Alley by means of five big markets plus special activities. The market will start with knocking a gong at 10:58. Fifty local shops and innovative vendors together form heterotopias market, old craftsman market, food market, local creative talents market, and planning market. Other activities include life photo exhibition of Peony Street, living library titled “Hello, Old Neighbor”, tambourine performance, graffiti wall painting, food experience, Cosplay Parade, guqin performance, open-air movies, communications of vendors and other activities.

He considered that this activity has helped residents and citizens better understand Guilin trade area as Changchun’s trendy humanistic community. It also builds a platform for improving residents’ humanistic quality and spiritual and cultural life, and opens a window for understanding this city. It has contributed to turning Guilin trade area into Changchun’s shiny brand. This activity promotes the residents’ sense of happiness and helps to build the eudemonia Chaoyang District and Guilin Street.
Mr. Wang Jiaming expressed his feeling about this activity on behalf of international experts. He believes that it is a good beginning of Changchun planning community survey from event planning to mutual participation of street blocks. Peony Street’s humanistic quality, environmental characteristic and street block culture have a good foundation. Organizing such an activity is beneficial to creating urban space. Mr. Wang Jiaming hopes that development of street block will begin with this activity. Merchants, residents and citizens should be allowed to jointly create a cultural environment and share resources. Cultural memory should be reserved and combined with local living characteristics and historic cultures to make young friends understand the past of Peony Street. He expects that this activity can guide city development to make the street manifest its own originality and vitality.
