The iPhone Dev-Team has released PwnageTool 4.2 which supports the iPhone 4, iPhone 3G and Apple TV 2G and jailbreaks iOS 4.2.1 on (almost) all iDevices. More importantly, PwnageTool allows you to Jailbreak without updating your baseband, allowing users to retain the ability to Unlock their iPhones. Here’s how to Jailbreak your iPhone 4 with PwnageTool.
These are instructions on how to jailbreak your iPad on iOS 4.2 using PwnageTool for Mac.
1. Make a folder called “Pwnage” on the desktop. In it, you will need a couple of things. PwnageTool 4.2, and the 4.2.1 iPhone firmware. You can download these from our iPhone Downloads page.
2. Double click the disk image to mount PwnageTool then drag the PwnageTool icon into the Pwnage folder. Then launch the PwnageTool application.
3. Click to select Expert Mode from the top menu bar
4. Select your device. A check-mark will appear over the image of the device. Click the blue arrow button in the bottom right corner to continue.
5. Click the “Browse for IPSW…” button. From the popup window select your firmware from the Pwnage folder then click the Open button.
6. You will then be brought to a menu with several choices. Click to select General then click the blue arrow button.
7. The General settings allows you to decide the partition size. Check Activate the phone if you are not with an official carrier then click the blue arrow button. Note that you should deselect Activate if you have an iPhone legitimately activated on an official carrier.
8. The Cydia settings menu allows you to create custom packages so you do not have to manually install the necessary them later. It’s unneccessary so do it if you wish but it’s fine to skip this step.
9. The Custom Packages Settings menu displays listed package settings for your custom IPSW. Leave this as is. Click the blue arrow button to continue.
10. You are now ready to begin the pwnage process! Click the Build button to select it then click the Blue arrow button to begin.
11. You will now be asked to save your custom firmware file. Save it to the folder you created on your Desktop. You may be asked for your administrator password. Enter this when prompted. This process may take up to 10 minutes.
12. Once your firmware file has been built you will be asked to connect your iPhone to the computer. Once it detects your device PwnageTool will guide your through the steps to putting your iPhone into DFU mode. Once your iPhone is successfully in DFU mode, PwnageTool will prompt you to launch iTunes.
13. Once you’re in iTunes, hold the Alt/Option key and click Restore in the iPhone section.
14. When it asks you to locate the firmware file, navigate to the Pwnage folder on your desktop using the dialog window that appears. Select the custom IPSW that you created and click the Choose button.
15. iTunes will now restore the firmware on your iPhone. This can also take up to 10 minutes. Once done your iPhone will reboot.
Congratulations, you’ve now updated your iPhone to Jailbroken iOS 4.2.1!
