The recent iOS 4.3 developer release is interesting for what it brings to the table, four-finger gestures, iPad side-switch control and Airplay for web content among them, but it’s also interesting for what it leaves out. In this case it’s a version of the new iOS for the iPhone 3G and iPod touch 2G.
Now we know that the iPhone 2G was already out of the update loop as it has not advanced beyond iOS 3.1.3, but the iPhone 3G looks like it has now joined the ranks of the ‘unsupported’. Considering how crappy iOS 4 runs on the iPhone 3G however, this is probably less of a surprise than it could have been.
I personally think that iOS 4 was only ever brought to the 3G as a marketing decision, to help the people that had purchased refurb 3G’s only 6 or 7 months before feel as if they were still being supported. I wonder if the 2 year mark is just about when we can expect for the new OS versions to stop being supported on older iPhones? If so that means we’ve got about a year and a half to enjoy new features on our iPhone 4’s.
