Enable Japanese Emoji Icons on your iPad, No Jailbreak Required

Emoji is the Japanese term for the emoticon style icons used in text messages, and they are absolutely everywhere in Japan, every wireless device in Japan uses them and they put our emoticon choices to shame! Check out the chart above for some of the choices, I mean, there’s an icon for poop for goodness sakes!

It turns out that the iPad is capable of displaying Emoji, but by default, they’re disabled for US users. There have been many methods for getting Emoji enabled on iPhones, but most of them involve complicated hacks and Jailbreaking your phone.  Check out today’s tip to enable Emoji on the iPad easily using only your settings.

To enable Emoji on your iPad:

Go to Settings > General > International > Keyboard and add the standard default Japanese keyboard.
When you want to use an emojicon, just tap the world icon next to the space bar, and bring up the Japanese keyboard and type “emoji” and the emoji keyboard will appear.

It’s not nearly as convenient as the way that the iPhone handles it, but you do have access to a wide array of Emoji for any occasion.

This doesn’t work for me. It only gives me about 5 black emoji-like icons, but no color ones.

After you type the word ‘emoji’ you have to tap the right arrow to reveal the entire selection of emoji. I’ve tried it many times and it works!

  3. Shannon on Wednesday 2, 2010

Right, those were the instructions from above and it didn’t work – I installed an emoji enabler from the itunes store and THEN followed your instructions, and that worked instead.

    Thank you.

This really worked, I wasted $2.99 on Text2Smiley. Their emoji keyboard is so complicated and disorganized. Your way was free, easy, and much easier and organized to use. Thanks a lot!!!!

No joy. No emoji. My Japanese keyboard simply has a key labelled “emoji.” Do I need to run a particular enabler app first?

I’m assuming you have an ipad2, if so, follow these instructions …

    1) ignore everything said above in this thread,
    2) delete any emoji app you may have downloaded,
    3) goto AppStore and search for ‘free emoji enabler and chat’ ( it’s free!!! )
    4) install the free app
    5) open the app
    6) close the app
    7) now go to notepad and open your keyboard, to the left of the spacebar there is a new icon with a world symbol, press this symbol and your keyboard changes to the emoji layout automatically

No need to muck about with any settings or typing emoji every time you wanna use them,

    Hope this helps 
